Um...not sure if the above description fits me perfectly...yet. However, I'm one of the ICAD Advertising Upstarts this year. For the past 6 weeks we've been answering briefs set by agencies such as Chemistry, Rothco, IIBBDO, McConnells, Publicis QMP and The Hive. Now, as part of Design Week '09 we will be exhibiting our work in the ICAD Upstarts exhibition which launches on November 3rd at 6.30pm in Space @ Rothco.

My idea for a viral was chosen to advertise the exhibition. The final touches are just being applied so keep an eye on your inbox. In the mean time here is a photo from the shoot:

Fallen Princesses by Dina Goldstein

I love these photos that Vancouver based photographer Dina Goldstein has taken based on princesses from Disney fairytale stories. In the photos Goldstein has juxtaposed the perfect princesses with real issues that were affecting women around her, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues. These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. The '...happily ever after' is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.

My latest invention: The Kick Switch

I can't claim full credit (most of that goes to Edison), but I've just come up with a great idea for anyone like me who tries to leave a room with their hands full of whatever junk they have strewn around it, plus a cup of boiling tea, and who then gets the Carbon-Foot-Print-guilt about leaving the light on. Rather than putting stuff down to free a hand to turn off the light I usually end up spending at least 3 bruise-inducing minutes struggling to turn the switch off with my forehead, and generally sloshing tea on the wall and floor in the process.

Not anymore though! While literally banging my head off a wall just moments ago (aiming for a light switch) I came up with the idea of having a second switch at skirting board height that I could kick to turn the light off.

Or I could just splash out on voice activated switches.

Advertising Idol

The Big Ad Gig is being run as part of Advertising Week '09 in the USA to help aspiring creatives get a 30-day paid work placement in an advertising agency in New York.

Following an X Factor / American Idol style format a panel of Creative Directors, CEOs and marketing leaders will be judging presentations from eight finalists, with 4 going on to win a month of freelancing for one of the following agencies: Atmosphere Proximity, Ogilvy NY, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness.
Unfortunately it's only open to residents of the United States.

Anyone interested in organising an Irish version?!

Best Gig In Ages

I love going to see bands that I've never heard of before. Last month my friend suggested going to see Hot 8 (a brass band from New Orleans) in Whelan's. It was without a doubt one of the best gigs I've ever been to. They got the whole audience side-stepping, dancing and moving. I will definitely be seeing them again.

A tip to anyone who plans to go see them and take photos: the big space at the very front of the stage, right in front of the trombone player, is not a space provided by the photo-gods for you to snap the pic of your life, (as I presumed). It is in fact a space for the trombone player to extend his instrument. If you're going to stand there be prepared to duck quickly or risk being impaled and suffering the wrath of an angry band member. I discovered this the hard way, but thankfully I had quick reflexes that night.
